UEFA’s sustainability investments cut carbon emissions from EURO 2024
Beyond the excitement of the matches and the vibrant atmosphere in the stadiums and fan zones, UEFA set out to redefine sustainable event hosting – a commitment reflected in the publication of the UEFA EURO 2024 Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Report, which was launched in Frankfurt on 1 November.
The UEFA EURO 2024 tournament saw more than 2.67 million fans attend football matches across Germany, with 5.4 billion viewers watching the event on television and UEFA invested €29.6m in sustainability initiatives around this massive sporting event.
In its new ESG report, published in Frankfurt in late last week, UEFA has stated that increased ambition and accountability within the sustainability space has pushed the association to drive forward ESG values which it considers ‘essential’.
The association created 150 performance measures, driven by 17 dedicated managers and more than 500 volunteers. Ultimately, 50 integrated environmental actions were implemented, reducing the carbon footprint of the tournament.
Key focus areas were energy efficiency and waste management at venues, plus minimising the impact of fan and team travel.
