The Sports Environment Alliance (SEA) is pleased to announce that the City of Darebin has joined its network of sport organisations committed to making a positive impact on the environment.

Located in Melbourne’s inner-north, the City of Darebin is home to over 160 000 people and a large community of sport and recreational clubs. The council strives to be a leader in creating a sustainable city through local innovative projects and initiatives.

The City of Darebin Mayor, Cr Susan Rennie, said that joining forces with SEA would strengthen the council’s knowledge in promoting a clean future for their sports community.

“As part of our aim to be leaders in creating a sustainable city, we are leading and collaborating with our sports clubs to be more environmentally sustainable and empower their members to play their role,” Cr Rennie said.

“Our partnership with the Sports Environment Alliance allows us to access a network of resources and contacts to help develop our knowledge and further initiatives in this space.”

The City of Darebin has already taken action this year, collaborating with SEA to eliminate single use plastics at sports clubs in the community.

“We co-hosted a sports club workshop this year on eliminating single use plastics with SEA. Our sports clubs are now better-educated and passionate to drive a club action plan supported by the council’s leisure, waste and environment teams,” Cr Rennie said.

On welcoming the City of Darebin to the SEA family, Dr Sheila Nguyen, Executive Director, acknowledged the city’s leadership and incredible ability to create positive environmental change.

“The City of Darebin’s commitment to protecting the environment is undeniable and we’re delighted to share their journey as they lead the sports community toward a sustainable future,” Dr Nguyen said.

“We look forward to supporting the City’s ambitious plans for their local sports clubs and we celebrate the steps they have already taken to protect the places where we play for future generations.”
