The Victorian Institute of Sport (VIS) has recently unveiled its inaugural Climate Action Plan

The Victorian Institute of Sport (VIS) has recently unveiled its inaugural Climate Action Plan, marking a significant commitment to addressing the impacts of climate change on sports and athletes. This initiative aligns with the global sports community's increasing dedication to combating climate change, recognizing the tangible effects on sporting activities, such as facility damage from storms and flooding, event cancellations due to low-snow winters, and rising incidences of heat-related illnesses.

VIS CEO, Nicole Livingstone OAM, emphasized the urgency of this action, noting that "In January this year the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) confirmed that 2024 was the warmest year on record. Blazing temperatures require trail-blazing climate action, and the VIS is acting now." By integrating sustainability into their mission of achieving success in sport and life, the VIS aims to foster a greener, healthier future for all, actively contributing to a climate-resilient Victoria.

The VIS has established a Sustainability Squad, comprising 18 dedicated staff and athlete representatives, to spearhead the implementation of the Climate Action Plan. Their initial efforts have identified nearly 50 actionable initiatives, ranging from procurement practices to travel policies and educational programs. A key priority is the calculation of greenhouse gas emissions to pinpoint major areas for impactful reductions.

This proactive approach by the VIS serves as an exemplary model for integrating climate action within the sports sector, demonstrating a commitment to ensuring that sports can thrive in a changing climate while promoting sustainability and resilience within the community.
