Sport’s Role in Nature Action: A Powerful Offense and Defence Against the Climate Crisis

Nature is one of our most valuable allies in the race against climate change — and the global sporting community is uniquely positioned to protect and restore it.

A new report from the Sports for Nature initiative, titled “Nature Action: The Sports’ Best Offense and Defence Against the Climate Crisis”, highlights how sport can go beyond sustainability and lead the charge in fostering a nature-positive future.

From community-level engagement to influence on global audiences, the report outlines how sport can:

  • Advocate for the protection and restoration of natural ecosystems,

  • Lead by example through sustainable operations and infrastructure, and

  • Inspire widespread action through the power of storytelling and cultural influence.

At Sports Environment Alliance, we believe in the potential of sport to be more than just a participant in climate action — we see it as a powerful catalyst for change. Our members are already making strides in integrating nature-positive practices into their operations, facilities, and fan engagement strategies.

This report is a timely reminder that now is the moment to deepen our collective commitment to protecting the environments we play in, live in, and love.
