IOC announces shortlist for inaugural Climate Action Awards

Launched in November 2022 as part of the International Olympic Committee - IOC's commitment to sustainability, the inaugural Climate Action Awards celebrate those in the Olympic Movement who are taking tangible steps to tackle the climate crisis.

More than 70 applications were received from across the Olympic Movement for three award categories: sustainable travel, innovation and athlete advocacy. Recently announced were the shortlisted athletes.

SailGP has highlighted the successes and challenges facing sport in the pursuit of inclusive and sustainable growth in its latest Purpose & Impact Report

SailGP made strong progress in its ambition to be 100 percent powered by clean energy on-shore and on-water by 2025. SailGP delivered five events 100 percent powered by clean energy in Season 3, an increase from one in Season 2. A total of 236 tonnes of carbon was saved by powering SailGP's events by clean energy - the equivalent of shipping one F50 catamaran around the world 150 times.

International Youth Day: the IOC and Allianz reveal global research findings on youth participation in sport

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) and Worldwide Olympic and Paralympic Insurance Partner Allianz SE (Allianz) have today announced initial global research findings* that reveal that 72% of young people think playing sport is important. Parents also recognise the benefits of sports participation, with over 90% saying they want their child to play sport to improve their physical and mental health. However, according to the research, young people report being less active due a number of everyday barriers and global issues, such as the cost of living (37%), climate change (30%) and the ongoing COVID-19 impact (34%).

Scientists agree that by far the biggest cause of the recent extreme warming is climate change from the burning of coal, oil and natural gas that has triggered a long upward trend in temperatures. A natural El Nino, a temporary warming of parts of the Pacific that changes weather worldwide, adds a smaller boost. But some researchers say another factor must be present.
