SEA x Deloitte Impact Day

SEA protects the places where we play sport, by driving change and providing the sports community with the equipment, network, knowledge, and training to secure a clean future.

As part of this mission, SEA was pleased to provide SEA Members with the opportunity to attend a half-day workshop with Deloitte, utilising their Climate Change Lab and Climate Led Transformation Framework, last week.

Attendees unpacked and explored the implications of climate change through different dimensions of the sporting industry and identified and aligned several priority focus areas, based on greatest urgency and highest impact to sports and sporting clubs in Australia.

The day featured Deloitte speakers, workshop activities and breakout groups, including:

  • Setting the scene: Exploring the effect and impact of climate change at all levels of sport in Australia.

  • Climate risk to climate opportunity: Identifying key implications of climate change across different dimensions. Determining those that will impact the business the most, in the most immediate timeframe.

  • Opportunity to impact: Identifying and aligning on several key focus areas for sports in Australia.

A key feature of the event was its cross-collaborative nature. Attendees not only shared different perspectives from an organisational viewpoint, but also considered the different roles each holds within their organisation. Conversations weaved around social impact; commercial views; current climate impact on community participation; green spaces, and their positive impact not just for the climate but also on mental health; and the athletes’ perspective.

The Climate Lab left participants with a better understanding of how they impact and will be impacted by climate change and equipped them to start addressing the challenges in their respective areas.

Key takeaways included:

  • Adaptation is the key short term and mitigation action should be part of the mid-term planning

  • Using a likelihood/consequences matrix will help to prioritise action items by urgency

  • Using partnerships for broader impact and influence is paramount for success

  • Education is key – with a focus on the opportunities

  • There is a trend to shift from voluntary reporting to mandatory reporting

After a hands-on workshop, knowledge sharing session, lunch, and networking, participants also walked away with a planning framework.

If you want to participate in our next workshop or event, make sure you and your organisation join SEA today.
