SEA Welcome Newest Member City of South Perth
Sports Environment Alliance (SEA) is pleased to announce City of South Perth as the newest member to its sport organisation network of those committed to making a positive impact on the environment.
The City of South Perth is home to approximately 44,000 residents, 4.6 square kilometres of public open space, and 12 active reserves used by more than 40 local sporting clubs.
City of South Perth Mayor Sue Doherty said the City’s partnership with SEA would assist the City in its goal of becoming a leading local government in environmental sustainable initiatives.
“There is much to be gained from cross organisational co-operation and knowledge sharing, and as City we look forward to collaborating with the Sports Environment Alliance and other institutions,” Mayor Doherty said.
On welcoming City of South Perth to the Sports Environment Alliance network, SEA Executive Director, Dr Sheila Nguyen, said the organisation is tremendously eager to have City of South Perth on board.
“Cities play an incredibly important role in the environmental movement, and globally, cities are heralding the climate flag,” Dr Nguyen said.
“In Australasia, cities directly provide vision, plan, and support growth of the sustainable kind for sport spaces, and we are pleased to announce City of South Perth, Western Australia (WA), as our second LGA member and our very first WA City.“
“We appreciate City of South Perth’s support and commitment to stand with us to vocalise and action the protection of our natural environment, to protect the future of the home of sport and the home of our greater communities.”
Mayor Doherty said the aims of the SEA align with the City’s commitment to promoting and implementing sustainable water, waste, land and energy management practices, including improving the sustainable use of active reserves and public open spaces.
“The City has a number of initiatives and strategies in place to reduce waste, preserve bushland and urban forest, enhance biodiversity, identify potential water savings, and sets goals to improve water usage,” Mayor Doherty said.
“The City’s parks and reserves are being progressively hydro-zoned and eco-zoned to conserve water, with the aim to provide high quality facilities for the local and wider community that support amenity, sport, recreation and biodiversity outcomes.
“Additionally, the City is committed to the development of Australia’s first Waste to Energy plant to significantly reduce our reliance on landfill disposal; making a step change towards achieving our zero waste objective. The next goal is to develop a Waste Management Plan to ensure the ongoing and improved delivery of waste education in the community, sustainable living programs, and a coordinated approach to increasing waste recovery in the City.”
