The wait is nearly over! In a little over 24 hours, the 2024 Olympic Games will finally be underway .
Behind the scenes, organisers of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games have been working for years to make sure that they will be the most sustainable Games ever. Large scale efforts include:
π Utilising 95% pre-existing venues
π± Offering twice as many plant-based food options
π Ensuring 100% of venues are grid-connected and powered by renewable energy
But the innovation doesn't stop there. By adhering to a core principle of using fewer resources and utilising them better, they have cut the estimated number of furniture items needed at the Games from 800,000 to 600,000, while ensuring their second life after athletes and spectators have gone home.
π± Two million pieces of sports equipment to be used at Paris 2024, 75 per cent of which will be rented or loaned out by sports federations. Three-quarters of the screens, computers and printers used at the Games will also be rented, a reflection of the circular-economy strategy employed by the organisers.
π Some 95 per cent of the Gamesβ 35 competition venues are pre-existing or temporary, the latter having been designed in such a way as to reduce their impact on biodiversity.
Sustainability is also a watchword when it comes to transport at Paris 2024. Visitors to the city will find more than 400km of new bike lanes, more than 80 per cent of Olympic venues situated within 10km of the Olympic Village, and all venues served by public transport, with operators in the Paris region expanding standard bus, metro and train services by 15 per cent.
