SEA welcomes Thornbury Turf Strokers Cricket Club to the #SEAFamily

SEA is excited to welcome Thornbury Turf Strokers Cricket Club (TTSCC) to the #SEAFamily.

Established in 2009 TTSCC competes in the Mercantile Cricket Association, with their home ground being the picturesque Corben Oval, located in the Yarra Bend Park.

TTSCC is passionate about on-field success; however, the club was founded by like-minded individuals as a largely social, community-based club that welcomes anyone who wants to be involved in the great game of cricket.

When it comes to their sustainability journey, Club President Patrick Hargreaves explained that TTSCC has already seen many of the effects of climate change in their ten-year history.

“Unpredictable weather changes have washed out games unseasonably. We've had to manage heat stroke for our players when temperatures reach 40°C,” Hargreaves said.

“Cricket is dependent on the environment like no other sport - a turf wicket is sacred and needs to be protected at all costs,” he continued.

When it comes to future proofing, TTSCC is committed to working on many {sport & planet} initiatives such as fostering a strong recycling culture and banning single use plastic cups.

“Parks Victoria are also currently redeveloping our rooms and we are consulting with them to ensure the re-development considers green power sources and incorporates the natural environment to ensure trees aren't cut down.”

In welcoming TTSCC to the #SEAFamily, SEA CEO Dr Sheila Nguyen highlighted the significance of community sport leading the {sport & planet} conversation.

“Community sporting clubs play a vital role in sports’ future proofing {and greening} efforts and their work must not be underestimated. It is through their leadership that we can protect the fabric and health of our communities.”

“We are excited to have Thornbury Turf Strokers Cricket Club on board and committed to doing more {for the world} with less {footprint}, so we can continue to have places to play,” Dr Nguyen concluded.

Welcome to the #SEAChange, TTSCC! We look forward to working with you to protect our places of play for generations to come.
