Palm Beach Surf Life Saving Club joins SEA

Today, on World Oceans Day, Sports Environment Alliance (SEA) is excited to welcome Palm Beach Surf Life Saving Club to the SEA family.

Located on the Southern Gold Coast, Palm Beach Surf Club is the first surf club to join SEA, and has a proud tradition of caring for the environment.

Executive Manager Daragh Murphy explained that the club’s surf life saving members have been protecting people in the ocean for decades and in turn, as its custodians, they see it as their duty to protect the ocean from the impact of people.

“As an organisation, we felt SEA's purpose aligned perfectly with our club values. #NoPlanetNoPlay is a simple yet powerful message for our members and community to support,” he said.

“We are honoured to be in such excellent company and are enthusiastic to learn and grow as #SEAChangers!”

On the {sport & planet} front, the club is working on a number of initiatives and has implemented sustainability practices into its operation, earning it accreditation as the first surf club in Australia to be certified as ‘Ocean Friendly’ by the Surfrider Foundation.

Mr Murphy added that the club has removed single-use plastic from its bar, restaurant and cafe operation; provides recycle and commingled bins, glass crushing and recycling; partners with local not-for-profits to sponsor events and runs environmental education workshops for members and community.

“The exciting part is that this is just the beginning!” he said.

In welcoming Palm Beach Surf Life Saving Club to the SEA family, SEA interim CEO Jack Peterson said that he is thrilled to see the first surf club join a list of growing {sport & planet} change makers.

“Surf clubs are an integral part of Australia’s cultural and sporting fabric and we look forward to working with Palm Beach Surf Life Saving Club and its members to protect our places and spaces of play for generations to come.”

Welcome to the #SEAChange, Palm Beach Surf Life Saving Club!
