Meet our #SEAPartner - Victoria University

Sports Environment Alliance works to support our family members' journeys in protecting the places where we play for generations to come through education, linking them to the wider sport and planet community, and celebrating their good {planet} leadership and actions.

We are proud to do this important work in collaboration with our incredible network of #SEAPartners.

This month, we are excited to introduce you to one of our partners - Victoria University.

Victoria University - the new way to do university

Victoria University (VU) is the university of Melbourne’s west - the city’s cultural and creative centre. With roots dating back to 1916, VU has been there with its community for the long haul, and continues to be a place for opportunity and success. It is considered Australia’s top university for graduate employability and has been ranked in the world’s top 2% of universities (in this category) since 2018.

As a dual sector university, VU makes it easy for students to pathway from

vocational education to higher education, offering unrivaled flexibility and a huge breadth of learning options for its students. VU students can transition from a certificate or diploma course, through to an undergraduate degree or even a postgraduate qualification with ease.

VU’s multi-award-winning VU Block Model has revolutionised tertiary education in Australia. This model diverges from traditional universities as it allows students to focus on one subject at a time for a four-week block, before moving on to the next subject. This allows students to fully immerse themselves in learning one topic, rather than being distracted by other classes.

The university emboldens its people to design their future and has a deep commitment to protecting country - people, place and planet. It supports and encourages its community of students, colleagues, allies, partners, alumni and friends to utilise their learning, research, career opportunities and community and industry development to shape their vision for the world’s future.

Inspiring new {sport & planet} leaders

“As one of Australia’s leading sports Universities, VU wants to ensure that sport is accessible for all, into the future.” - Professor Andrew Stewart, Dean of the College of Sport and Exercise Science

Offering over 40 sport-related courses university wide, including world-renowned sport science and human movement programs, Victoria University is a global leader in sports education. Combining this sports excellence with a passion for planetary health and commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s), makes VU the perfect partner for SEA.

The university’s four pillars of planetary health - Research with impact, Learning that changes lives, Working with our community and University sustainability initiative, have been thoughtfully tailored to create four pillars for sustainable sport:

  1. Sport for Innovation

  2. Sport for Inspiration

  3. Sport for Community Cohesion

  4. Sport for Social Change

This focus on sustainable sport is unrivalled globally and positions VU as a true trailblazer in this space.

“VU’s Planetary Health focus challenges researchers, teachers, students and staff to find sustainable solutions to issues impacting the wellbeing of people, communities, Country, and environment; recognising that the wellbeing of all is dependent on the wellbeing of our planet.” - Associate Professor Camilla Brockett, Institute for Health and Sport

Working together to make a difference

VU’s appetite to partner with SEA is founded on a simple ambition - to help make a difference to our planet through sport.

“Victoria University can provide a unique education and research perspective to SEA members to advance their contribution to the global agenda for planetary health and sustainable sport.” - Associate Professor Camilla Brockett, Institute for Health and Sport

This partnership will involve collaboration on learning unit content development, case study creation and future research opportunities, and will allow SEA members to reach new sport and planet heights by providing a unique education and research perspective to strengthen their understanding and contribution to environmental health.
