Keith Bradshaw
A joint tribute by Sports Environment Alliance (SEA) and British Association for Sustainable Sport (BASIS)
It is with deep sadness that we heard of the passing of Keith Bradshaw on 8 November 2021, following a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Keith was respected and loved in Australian and English cricket, both as a player and an administrator. He was instrumental in the founding of BASIS, giving the opening address to the very first meeting of the fledgling organisation, and was a founding advisory board member of Sports Environment Alliance.
He supported our planetary movement as the CEO of #SEAFoundationMember South Australian Cricket Association when SEA was created in 2015, and as the Chief Executive of Marylebone Cricket Club, at Lord’s Cricket Ground, during the inception of BASIS.
With his involvement in both organisations, Keith had a unique position and thus may have contributed more to the sport and planet movement globally than any other individual - and we thank him for this invaluable contribution and legacy.
We remember Keith as a courageous individual who took the time to mentor, guide, and share his expertise and #envirolove to support a greater cause.
Keith showed compassion and willingness to facilitate and empower others, demonstrating true leadership, even while courageously battling his own adversity.
Keith’s legacy is impactful, lasting and his passing will be felt by many in the local and global sporting communities as well as the sustainable sports movement.
In reflecting on Keith’s contribution, Sheila Nguyen, SEA CEO, notes, “we are forever grateful for Keith’s kindness, honesty, and support of SEA, and the wider planetary health and sport movement. Keith extended his energy and care to make visions of a better world come alive.”
Russell Seymour, Chief Executive of BASIS remembers Keith. “While working for Keith at Lord’s, I took a report to him detailing the carbon footprint and waste management opportunities for the ground, at a time when very few were thinking of such things in the context of sports events. It was a mark of his understanding and openness that his response was ‘this is important, would you like a full-time role?’ From that one act, Lord’s came to the forefront of sustainability and sport and BASIS was eventually born. I, and the sustainable sport movement, are grateful to Keith for his vision and leadership.”
