2029 ASIAN WINTER GAMES SEA STATEMENT

SEA, at its core, believes in protecting the places where we play for generations to come by doing more {for the world} with less {footprint}.

Saudi Arabia being awarded the hosting rights for the 2029 Asian Winter Games raises concerns when taking into consideration the natural environment of the chosen location.

Although reducing the reliance on fossil fuels and diversifying economic growth is important in the Middle East, the creation of a brand new winter sports environment where snowfall is historically unreliable seems counter intuitive.

Sport must use its voice to be a megaphone for a cleaner, greener future.

We call upon all parties involved in this decision making, to embrace environmental action and prioritise our shared planet.

In light of this development, we also urge our National Sporting Organisations to act with the climate emergency front of mind, and to support the development and funding of a Federal Sports Environment Strategy.

The time to act is now.
