Sports Environment Alliance (SEA) is pleased to support our Foundation Member, the Victorian Racing Club (VRC), at its ‘VRC Thanks The Community Raceday’ at Flemington Racecourse this weekend.
On Saturday 15th December, Flemington Racecourse will host a number of races in honour of community organisations and VRC charity partners. SEA is excited to announce that Race 2 of the VRC Thanks The Community Raceday will be named the ‘Sports Environment Alliance Handicap’.
Additionally, the VRC Thanks The Community Raceday will also see the VRC enact a number of initiatives to underline the organisation’s commitment to being a leader in the environmental sustainability space.
The Sports Environment Alliance Handicap will be run on a track maintained using water drawn from beneath the racetrack then desalinated using on-course desalination plants, while screens around the venue will be powered in part by solar panels on The Grandstand at Flemington. Biodegradable cutlery and straws will also be used at Flemington Racecourse throughout the day.
Executive General Manager Flemington Operations James Reid said VRC Thanks the Community Raceday was an opportunity to highlight the VRC’s strong track record on sustainability, and its renewed commitment to take that to the next level.
“Sustainability is always evolving and sport and major events that are held on a global scale – like the Melbourne Cup Carnival – are crucial to driving conversation about what the next sustainability generation looks like,” Reid said.
“As a founding member of SEA, we see a lot of opportunity and potential in its role in that conversation, and are proud to be supporting the alliance through this race day.”
SEA Executive Director, Dr Sheila Nguyen, said the organisation was proud of its association with the VRC and was encouraged by the environmental initiatives implemented by the organisation in its time as a member of the SEA network.
“We are extremely excited to support the VRC at its VRC Thanks The Community Raceday,” Dr Nguyen said.
“We hope this will help raise awareness about the importance of our natural environment as well as promote the leadership group of SEA, including our Foundation Member, the VRC.”
