Located in the heart of Brunswick, BBC is part of Australian folklore, with a colourful history spanning over 100 years. TrailsPlus is Victoria’s premier trail running company, encompassing a priority focus on participation, enjoyment and achievement while respecting and caring for the environment they play in.
Following the announcement, SEA Executive Director Dr. Sheila Nguyen spoke eagerly about having both organisations on board,
“We’re thrilled that Brunswick Bowling Club and TrailsPlus have joined the family. We are keenly aware that communities are where impact happens and we look forward to welcoming their families of change makers to ours”
“From the energy saving fixtures BBC have installed, to their constant environmental push to their members, the club has already shown great promise in their climate change initiatives and we’re truly enthused to have them as part of our family.”
“For years, TrailsPlus has committed to protecting our environment through openly communicating with their partners to be plastic free, encouraging their participants to leave no trace, and constantly looking for ways to expand their own initiatives to reduce plastic waste.”
What they said:
Brunswick Bowling Club President, Cameron Foley:
“We are proud to be Australia’s first Lawn Bowls Club to become a member of the Sports Environment Alliance, joining the push to leverage the much-loved culture of sport to raise awareness, share knowledge, and support actions to protect our planet.”
“We have installed a 20kW Solar System, installed energy savings fixtures, incorporated passive heating and cooling elements and promoted key behavior change initiatives that our friends and members can apply in their homes and workplaces.”
TrailsPlus Race Director, Brett Saxon:
“TrailsPlus has always aimed to “leave no trace” where we play and we are proud to lead the way by becoming the first in our sport of trail running to join the Sports Environment Alliance. In 2012 we adopted a no plastic cups policy opting for paper cups, and in 2018 we adopted a no cups policy opting for BYO reusable cups. We have expanded to remove individual plastic bags for our medals and merchandise, and we separate recyclable, general and compostable waste.
“Teaming up with SEA, we’re keen to learn more efficient ways to play in our environment and minimise our environmental footprint, while continuing to educate and encourage our participants to leave no trace.”
“Some actions and initiatives we have put in place to fulfill our environmental objectives include,”
- Eliminating all single use plastics
- Refining ordering processes to avoid excess waste
- Encourage our partners to be paper and plastic free
- Leading by example and encouraging our participants, partners to take home and adopt our initiatives
- Learning from the SEA family to ensure our environment wins
